Mental health is frequently a major concern for the families of teens and young adults. According to data provided by the CDC, in 2021, more than a third (37%) of high school students reported they experienced poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and 44% reported they persistently felt sad or hopeless during the past year. Having open and frank discussions about parenting and personal experiences with mental health challenges can go a long way toward recognizing when our kids need extra help.
The Women’s Fund of the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh are hosting an important community conversation about mental health with special guest, Sue Kelbold, the mother of Dylan Klebold – one of the shooters in the Columbine High School massacre of 1999. She will speak about her experience before and after the shooting including what she missed and what she’s doing now as a mental health advocate.
This unique opportunity provides a forum for our community with a starting place for more open communication about the challenges that our teens and young adults are facing.
